Newtown Creek was once a heralded manufacturing district renowned for the industrial goods and services it provided on national and global scales. Almost two centuries have passed and today it now functions at a fraction off of what remnants of industry have survived. Decades of prolonged environment degradation have left the Creek in disrepair, long overdue for a paradigm shift in how we approach what industry and manufacturing districts should functionally provide for modern urbanities. Where the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens converge at Dutch Kills, several established and proposed developments will inevitably densify the communities around the Creek, shifting its character away from industrial cornerstone to high-rise village. Newtown Creek deserves a revival as a waterfront district that not only supports a growing population, but also upholds the industrial heritage that originally brought it success. “The Newtown Nexus” acts as an equivoque of the industrial park, yet is rooted in a fundamentally differently urban configuration. Our master vision for Newtown Creek aims to construct a framework radiating from the water outwards, showcasing a mixed-use typology fused through industry, commerce, and residence that is ultimately embedded into a resilient and greened landscape.
